二十年代的上海，柴十七(黎耀祥飾)欠債纍纍，突然被永業銀行主事人「七爺」鄧桂嬋(胡定欣飾)召見，十七運用其商業頭腦擺平銀行的擠提風暴，兩人自此演變出非一般的僱傭關係。十七一直獲經營酒樓的桂氏一家照顧，千金桂花香(陳曉華飾)重遇求學時期的心上人韋豪(羅天宇飾)；韋豪本是混江湖的殺手，十七卻日漸看到韋豪對花香的情意，從反對變成接受。動盪亂世，戰火槍炮不斷，桂嬋接連碰到軍政猛人林茂財(蕭正楠飾)等神秘對頭，將她和十七、韋豪、花香逼上懸崖險境，劫禍連連……

Rewind to the 1920s in Shanghai, and Chai Shap-chat (Wayne Lai) struggles to repay his debts. He is abruptly summoned by Wing Yip Bank principal Tang Kwai-sim (Nancy Wu), aka Master. Shap-chat uses his business acumen to deal with the bank run crisis. The duo have since developed an unusual employment relationship. Shap-chat has been taken care of by the Kwais, who are veterans in the restaurant business. The Kwais’ daughter Kwai Fa-heung (Hera Chan) again runs into her schooldays crush Wai Ho (Joey Law). Wai Ho is actually a gangland hitman. However, Shap-chat gradually understands Wai Ho’s affection for Fa-heung, so he eventually comes to terms with their romantic relationship. During these turbulent times, the war continues. Kwai-sim keeps bumping into mysterious antagonists, including military and political strong man Lam Mau-choi (Edwin Siu), who forces her, Shap-chat, Wai Ho and Fa-heung to end up on a cliff edge. And more troubles are looming.
